Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) is a cutting-edge approach that blends the effects of ketamine—a dissociative anesthetic—with traditional talk therapy to help people work through mental health challenges. Here's how it works:

🧠 The Basics of KAP

  • Ketamine’s Role: Ketamine is administered in subanesthetic doses, often via nasal spray or lozenges, to induce a trance-like or dissociative state. This altered state can help loosen rigid thought patterns and reduce emotional defenses.

  • Therapeutic Window: While under the influence of ketamine, patients may experience increased openness, reduced fear, and enhanced introspection. This creates a unique window for deep psychological work.

  • Integration Sessions: After the ketamine experience, therapists guide patients through integration sessions to process insights, emotions, and memories that surfaced during the altered state.

🧩 What It Helps With

KAP is being explored for a range of conditions, especially when traditional treatments fall short:

  • Major depressive disorder (MDD)

  • PTSD

  • Anxiety disorders

  • OCD

  • Substance use disorders

  • Chronic pain and trauma-related symptoms

⚙️ How It Works Neurologically

Ketamine acts as an NMDA receptor antagonist, which helps disrupt entrenched neural pathways and promote neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to form new connections. This can help patients “uncouple” from stuck patterns of thought and emotion.

🛡️ Safety & Legality

Ketamine is a Schedule III controlled substance in the U.S., meaning it’s legal for medical use under supervision. Though FDA-approved as an anesthetic, it’s prescribed “off-label” for mental health treatment.

  • If you are missing a sense of community, attend a group that has a set group of people attending.
  • Speak with your clinician about which group will be right for you.
